Father’s Day 2024 : history, facts and famous Hollywood fathers

The creation of Father’s Day is largely attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd. The celebration later expanded on the same date throughout Latin America.

USA and Latin America celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June. This day honors fathers and father figures, recognizing their contributions to their families and society.

It’s a time for children, young, men and women to express appreciation and love for their fathers through various activities such as giving gifts, preparing special meals, spending quality time together, and sharing heartfelt messages.

The celebration emphasizes the important role that fathers play in their children’s lives and their impact on the broader community.

Not working day?

In USA, businesses, organizations, and stores operate as they do on any other Sunday. Public transit systems follow their regular Sunday schedules. However, restaurants might be busier than usual since many people take their fathers out to celebrate.

In Arizona, Father’s Day is recognized as a state holiday. However, since it always falls on a Sunday, most state government offices and employees follow their standard Sunday schedules.

The creation

The creation of Father’s Day is largely attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Her father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings alone after their mother passed away during childbirth.

The idea reportedly came to her in 1909 while she was listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which was then gaining recognition as a holiday. Local religious leaders embraced the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of her father’s birthday.

In 1924, U.S. President Calvin Coolidge endorsed the celebration, and in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation officially recognizing the day. It became a national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed legislation establishing the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Although it was originally largely a religious holiday, Father’s Day has been commercialized with the sending of greeting cards and the giving of gifts. Some observe the custom of wearing a red rose to indicate that one’s father is living or a white rose to indicate that he is deceased.
Other males—for example, grandfathers or uncles who have assumed parenting roles—are often also honoured on the day.
