Elon Musk’s X now officially allows pornographic content on its platform but says it will block adult and violent posts from being seen by users who are under 18 or who do not opt-in to see it.

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially announced that it will permit the posting of consensual adult content, provided it is clearly labeled. This formalizes a policy that was informally in place prior to Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform in 2022.
In an update on its website, the San Francisco-based company stated that users should have the freedom to create, share, and view content with sexual themes, as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. The company emphasized that sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a valid form of artistic expression.

Although adult material was permitted under Twitter’s previous management, there was no formal policy. X has clarified that adult content will be restricted for children and for adult users who opt out of seeing it. The platform also prohibits content that promotes exploitation, non-consent, objectification, sexualization, harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. Additionally, adult content cannot be shared in highly visible areas like profile photos or banners.
This policy sets X apart from other social media platforms such as Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, TikTok, and Google’s YouTube, which have stricter guidelines on nudity and sexual content.
Teenagers have reported seeing pornographic material more on X than on adult sites. So, for many specialists, this move aligns with X’s post-Musk marketing strategy to be more provocative, but now will have more control on under 18.
