Writing reports, translating texts, coding basic scripts, analyzing data, designing graphics, and handling customer support can now be done by AI in seconds. But there is one thing these systems still cannot do: understand the world the way humans do.

AI does not understand the world. It imitates it
One of the biggest misconceptions about artificial intelligence is that it “thinks.” It does not. It does not reason, reflect, or comprehend. What it does is identify patterns across massive datasets and reproduce them in statistically probable ways.
That means AI cannot distinguish between what is fair and unfair, true and false, acceptable and offensive. If its data contains bias, it will replicate that bias. If the data reflects discrimination, the system will amplify it. If harmful narratives appear frequently, they will be normalized.
To prevent AI from becoming a large-scale reproduction of humanity’s worst tendencies, something essential is required: interpretation, context, ethical judgment, historical awareness, and cultural sensitivity.

One of the fastest-growing areas in AI development is applied ethics. This is no longer about abstract debates. It is about real-world decisions that affect millions of people.

How algorithmic discrimination can be prevented
What kinds of errors are acceptable
These are not technical questions. They are moral, political, and social ones.
That is why tech companies are increasingly hiring philosophers, ethicists, and political theorists to join product teams. They may not write code, but they help define limits, values, and responsibilities. In an algorithm-driven world, they function as a form of collective conscience.
Literature and linguistics: when language becomes a problem
AI can generate fluent text, but it does not truly understand language. It struggles with irony, sarcasm, cultural references, emotional nuance, and double meanings. It cannot reliably tell when something is humorous, hurtful, ambiguous, or context-dependent.
A sentence that sounds neutral in one country may be deeply offensive in another. A phrase can be literal in one situation and metaphorical in another.
This is why linguists, literary scholars, and discourse analysts are increasingly involved in training language models, evaluating outputs, and correcting semantic errors.

History: the memory machines do not have
Artificial intelligence does not understand historical processes. It does not recognize social cycles, political radicalization, or the difference between journalism and propaganda.
This makes it dangerously efficient at spreading misinformation, extremist narratives, and conspiracy theories.
Historians contribute something essential: the ability to contextualize events, recognize recurring patterns, and identify when something that looks new is actually a recycled version of an old conflict.
In the age of AI, history is no longer just about remembering the past. It becomes a tool for anticipating risk.
Sociology and anthropology: protecting diversity in a digital world
Most AI systems today are trained primarily on Western, urban, English-language data. This creates technologies that fail to understand non-Western cultures, marginalized communities, and alternative ways of interpreting reality.
Sociology and anthropology help explain how people organize their lives, what values they prioritize, how they communicate, and what they consider respectful or harmful.
Without this knowledge, AI risks imposing a single worldview, erasing nuance and reinforcing inequality.
Psychology: the emotional impact of machines
AI systems do not have emotions, but they influence human emotions deeply.
They can create dependency, increase anxiety, simulate relationships, influence decisions, and reshape behavior. They can comfort, mislead, or manipulate.
