Latino voters, a diverse and widespread group across the country, were instrumental in Trump’s electoral victory. His campaign focused on appealing to this demographic through economic proposals, measures to combat inflation and job creation.
Latino voters boosted their support for presidential candidate and now President-elect Donald Trump by 13 percentage points in this election, reaching 45% of that electorate. This surpasses the record set by George W. Bush among Republican presidential candidates in 2004.
According to exit polls from NBC released on Wednesday, the Democratic candidate and Vice President, Kamala Harris, secured 53% of the Hispanic vote in Tuesday’s elections. This marks a significant drop compared to the 65% that Joe Biden obtained in the 2020 elections, the 66% won by Hillary Clinton in 2016, and the 71% of Latino support received by Barack Obama.
Harris’s performance among Hispanic voters was weaker than Biden’s across all swing states, with the exception of Wisconsin, where she improved by just one percentage point.
Latino Vote: Key to Trump’s Victory
The most significant decline for Harris occurred in Michigan, where her support dropped by 24 points to just 35%. Pennsylvania also saw a significant shift, with support falling by 21 percentage points compared to Biden’s 2020 numbers, settling at 57%.
Other notable decreases in support for Harris were seen in Florida, where she lost 11 points compared to 2020, and in Texas, where her Latino support fell by 15 points.
In this election, Trump secured a clear mandate, winning five out of the seven critical swing states. Results in Nevada and Arizona are still pending, but Trump currently holds an advantage in both.
